The Navis Nobilite is the organization in charge of Navigators within the Imperium of Man, which allows its ships to travel safely into the Warp.[1]

History[]

The Navis Nobilite history is lost to time, and may even predate the creation of the Imperium. Previous to the apparition of Navigators, interstellar travel was a tedious affair. While not impossible, Warp travel was almost suicidal, and required tremendous computational power and complex charts to even reach the closest stellar systems.[2] Without the support of the Navis Nobilite, uniting humanity under the banner of the Imperium would have been impossible.[1]

Organization[]

The Navis Nobilite is composed of several Great Houses,[1] each one a millennia-old dynastic bloodlines. Because of the Imperium absolute reliance on Navigators, these Houses hold formidable status and powers, but they are also caged by their duties and can't enjoy much of their position.[2]

House Orsellio has been present within the Koronus Expanse foe several centuries, with Cassia Orsellio the last scion of this line.[3] A few known members of the house include Felek Orsellio and Theobald Orsellio. Calomira Orsellio, Alexius Orsellio, and Rasmus-Estevan Orsellio have passed away.[4]

Navigators[]

Navigators are humans possessing a specific stable mutation (that might have been engineered) called the "Third Eye", allowing them to peers into the Warp without suffering the worst of its effect. Each imperial voidship includes a Navigator installed into it's personal Sanctum. From there, a Navigator can pierce the veil between the Warp and realspace, allowing them to perceive the Warp's currents as well as the Astromanican, Terra's psychic beacon, which permit them to guide the vessel to its destination. Each Navigator experience the Warp in a subjective way, based on their personality: for some it is a raging sea, for other a desert, or even a city at night. This abstractive perception tends to dispel once they accumulate enough experience. With age, the Warp can take quite a toll on a Navigator, some are crippled by their failing bodies and restrained to their Sanctum[2] (also called Navigator Chambers),[1] while others can be driven mad.[2]

The Third Eye as a undesired secondary effect in that it, if it is uncovered, it can be mortal for any mortal to peer into.[1]

Gameplay[]

Navigators in game are similar to psykers in that they are an Origin that grants Warp-based abilities separate from the character's Archetype. But unlike psykers, they do not have a Psy Rating, and their abilities do not trigger Perils of the Warp. The Rogue Trader cannot be a Navigator, and the only companion that is a Navigator is Cassia. Whenever she gains an ability from her Archetype, she can instead choose to learn a Navigator ability, though some require learning a different ability first. She also has a set of Navigator talents that can be taken as common talents. There are some NPC Navigators that appear in the game and use the same abilities that are available to Cassia.
